As I start my sixth week of higher education, I cannot help but wonder if the amount I’m paying, roughly forty-eight thousand usd (which isn’t worth much considering canada is beating us…barely) is really getting me what I expected and hoped for. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Parsons but I’ve been disappointed for the last six weeks from the projects, examples and discussions. A thing or two makes me go, “Ooo…” but not much else. The websites of my peers and upperclassmen? WHAT WEBSITES!?
I’ve come to face with a lot of disappointment and I cannot believe that half don’t have websites, their school-based websites are left to shit or not even being used, and that the work being shown is nothing that would make a corporation or agency even bother considering you for long-term commitment.
Looking at what I just wrote, I wonder if I’ve been too harsh or if I’m just rambling and pulling shit out of my ass ignorantly. No. I don’t think I am. There was an article in computerArts, which I have to find for Henni, that spoke of modern communication designers being needed to have skills in html, css, flash on top of photoshop, illustrator and quark. So why am I NOT seeing this?
That was my general feeling, and to an extent still is, with Parsons and my peers. I’ve managed to stumble across one designer that blows my mind away with his work. His name, is Thomas Jockin and I’d like you all to check out his website: http://thomasjockin.com. It is absolutely wonderful the words he has up at the moment, and gave me hope and somewhat pride to be a part of parsons =x

No, you’re not being too harsh at all. If you’re attending a class that specializes in graphic arts, web design and modern communication, then you should have a functioning website to show off your work. At least I would think so…..
I always thought that if you were taking such courses building a website would be mandatory?
